Basic Blackjack Strategy Chart

Blackjack strategy charts are based upon the statistic data of blackjack games. They serve to help player to win. These charts depict actions (Hit, Stand, Double, Surrender or Split)grouped according to the certain conditions (value of player’s hand, value of dealer’s face up card). Professional players make their decisions taking into account these schemes.

HOW TO READ THE CHART

If you want to use blackjack strategy charts you should understand the scheme. As a rule, the table contains values of player’s hand, dealer’s up card and coded actions.

The scheme below is a blackjack strategy chart used for one of the most common variations of the game – when dealer stands on soft 17 with 4 decks or more. From the left you can see vertical column, where values of player’s cards are indicated. At the top of the scheme (horizontal column) the values of dealer’s up card are shown.

4 or more decks, dealer stands on soft 17

In order to understand what to do, you should line up the columns (both horizontal and vertical) and that you will find the correct action. All actions are indicated in a form of abbreviation. These abbreviations stand for:

  •  H  - Hit
  •  S  - Stand
  •  DD  - Double Down
  •  P  - Split
  •  H/P  - Split if you can double after split, otherwise hit
  •  H/R  - Surrender if allowed, otherwise hit
  • A always stands for A

Let’s analyze the following situation:

As we can see at the picture below, player has two cards – 8 and 5. Total value of them is 13. Dealer’s up is Ace. Using the table, we may see that vertical 13 meets horizontal Ace at the point marked as H. Coded action H means Hit, so in this situation player must Hit.

One more situation is when player has two cards valuated as 10.

Using the Blackjack strategy chart, which you can find above, we can understand what step will be the right one. According to the scheme, the player should Split his cards into different hands (S sign).

Playing blackjack online you may print the scheme and check your decisions according to it. If you prefer play blackjack at the casino, you may buy a Blackjack strategy card (a small card on which the scheme is depicted). You can use this card at the casino not to forget the consequence of actions. These cards are allowed almost at all casinos.

Blackjack strategy charts vary according to the blackjack rules. You cannot use the same scheme for single deck blackjack and multiple deck blackjack. Pay attention whether dealer stand on soft 17 or hits, rules of doubling, allowance of doubling after split, presence of surrender etc.

Remember! Blackjack strategy cards do not guarantee the winning.

“Son, we are sorry about the tuition funds...your mother and I did not know you are not supposed to split tens...”
